K: Hood to Coast Goodie Bags

In 9 weeks, Syd and I will be running her 2nd and my 4th Hood to Coast, a 199 mile relay with our 11 (hoping for 12) member team, Old Enough to Know Better. We are split into two vans of 6 people, and this is the third time I have been in a van with the same core group of women/nonbinary folks all around 27-32 years old. Since our van captain, Fennel’s, dad is the team leader and the captain of the other van, he has a crew of men around his age and value style. So, Fennel’s core van of myself and Carlie have worked pretty hard to maintain the shes, theys, and gays vibe of our van. This year, it mostly worked, however my husband will be joining us after a few members of our van had to drop because of pregnancies.

This year, Syd and I are embracing girly running era culture by creating goodie bags for all members of our van. Why? Thank you for asking. While 24 hours deep into our last H2C, we all had the sillys and were discussing that our team needs a new name since most of the OG members of the team had retired. Our team captain’s name is Randy and someone said we should be Feelin’ Randy. We have been laughing about the name for a year, but no one had the confidence to bring a new name up to our team captain. So, we are going to run with Feelin’ Randy for just our van. Also, Syd likes whimsy, and I like making Etsy purchases after three glasses of wine.

What goes into a H2C goodie bag? Thank you again for the engagement. The goal is to hand these out at the start of the race which for our van is likely to be around 2 am. We wanted to balance between serious items that folks could use for the race and whimsical things that would make our team mates laugh. Here is what we’ve come up with so far:

  • Liquid IV or other electrolyte powder
  • Friendship bracelets (ala Taylor Swift concert vibes)
  • Saturday Strides socks
    • 1 pair per person because I am not made of money
  • 3x Glitter freckles
    • These went over awesome last year but they were gone before our second legs
  • Glow sticks for the dark portions of the race.
  • Running related stickers
  • This silly tote I designed while on a 3rd glass of wine
